The Lillywhite Sessions (LWS) is a collection of songs recorded by Dave Matthews Band in 1999 and 2000 and produced by Steve Lillywhite. The songs, recorded by the band as a follow-up to their 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets, were ultimately scrapped by the band. This is frequently attributed to pressure from RCA executives to wrap up the sessions and release an overdue (per contract), upbeat album (the LWS were considered on the darker side by RCA).[by whom?] Upon abandoning the album-in-progress, Dave Matthews was assigned to work with producer Glen Ballard who, in association with Matthews, wrote the album Everyday in just ten days. This contrasted with the band's prior style of writing, which included significant collaboration between the band members in the studio. The recordings later emerged on the internet shortly after the release of Everyday, and created controversy among fans as well as the music industry, which was early in its campaign to curb illegal file downloads.

The Lillywhite Sessions were never released.

Yeah, I know that this is music unrelated, but I think my 7 or 8 frequent guests aren't going to mind too damn much me spending a few minutes discussing one of the best tales ever told being raised upon the talkies, both large and small.

Yes all, I am speaking of Stephen King's masterpiece The Dark Tower.

For those of you who know not what I speak of, I ask you to seek out the tale and immerse your mind into it. Do it now, please.

For those that do know, and have traveled many wheels with Roland Deschain, the Last Gunslinger of Gilead that was and the Ka-Tet of Nineteen, hear me now I beg.

The undertaking of transferring the epic tale to film is possibly impossible to begin with, despite the fact that every soul who has ever traveled it desires to see it done so. Those of us who believe that Sai King actually was the medium and pivot for its creation on this level secretly fear the slow destruction of its purity, yet desire to see its justice brought forth. Such an undertaking, in the hands of the wrong interpreters, would surely spell disaster for those who hold the tale so dear, including the author himself.

Unfortunately, most of the bard's tales transfer poorly to film due to the cerebral level he communicates on. With the few exceptions of personal interpretation (Kubrick's vision of The Shining is one), Stephen King's beautiful stories are usually lost on film. It is no fault of the author, yet I can give my opinion that it is the fault of the production. Lame casting, poor editing and half-assed directing have plagued his devoted time and again, leaving us with empty feelings and hoping some good glorious day something might arise that could do justice to the tales we love.

The Dark Tower is not your typical King tale at all. If anything, it is his finest work. If it should fall into the wrong hands it could suffer beyond all measure.

Enter Director Ron Howard and his vision.

Yes, he has been tapped to tackle the epic journey of The Last Gunslinger and his quest for the Dark Tower. NBC Universal announced that The Dark Tower will see the light of day as three films and two television series. The two television series will span the gap between the films and use to its advantage the extended time a serial provides.

So comes the first question on every one's minds.

Who will be cast as Roland of Gilead?

The answer?

It is swirling around the halls of Entertainment that Oscar nominated actor Javier Bardem has been offered the role. My first thought was- Yeah, that could definitely work.

So yes, I am now a little more hopeful that this really could work. Let us all who really care continue to hope and offer up our opinions as The Tower draws near.

This is an old jawbone that has been stuck in my back pocket for years, left on an unmarked cassette that somehow keeps rearing up and flashing its red light of yesterday.

Every other year or so for the past fifteen years I kept finding this tape without a label laying about the cluster of my music. Granted, there are at least a hundred of said tapes laying about my home in various boxes, all relics of a forgotten medium that I do miss terribly (I still wish to have a cassette player in the Jeep, but with discs and iPods...right?) but this one tape always pops up. I remember listening the hell out of it in some faded induced past of my youth, but it didn't have a label. So I would always say that 'Yeah, I'll get around to investigating who exactly it is.'

You that know me, know that I eventually will get around to certain things, and this time I did.

Good ole Internet and its lyric searches.

Then it all came flooding back.

My senior year at Valley High School, mama. Quicksand was in the deck of the Nova. I think Mark Kitko turned me on to this one. Great album. Still kicks ass.

Awhile back- meaning a few months, I would say- we were hanging around Manifest Records here in Charlotte, just killing time in one of our favorite ways. Browsing through the racks of never-ending glory I caught myself zigging and zagging back and forth to this recognizable tune on the speakers. Let me just say, that I was totally immersed in the stacks of music and the tunes overhead keep you smiling as you dig on and on and on, but this was a song I knew, but I didn't. It was sooo recognizable but wasn't.

Stopping dead in my tracks, I gave my good dog ear one turn toward the sound and froze. It was reggae, sure, but it was frigging Dark Side Of The Moon! And it was sooo damn good.

So you know I had to B Line over to the center counter where they play the music from and I found out about The Easy Star All-Stars and their dripping gold send up to everyone's favorite album.
I didn't buy it then, I wanted it on vinyl and ended up ordering it for us online.

Here in our little cottage on this side of the forest we spent the weekend spinning record after record during the New Year's birth with soothing lights and love. Dub Side of the Moon received monstrous play time and it makes you so happy.

The All-Stars HAVE to be huge Dark Side fans, because this album is nothing but a labor of love.

R. CRUMB AND HIS CHEAP SUIT SERENADERS (1974)

Far deep in the layers of your skull, there should be a small circuit that is intended to make you smile at the simple things in life. This fine, delicate trigger is very important for your survival as a decent human being. So small and so simple, it tries to keep up with your transcending adult responsibilities and is usually snuffed out around the age of 15. That is why most people are assholes.

If for some rare reason you still have the smiling personality of your fifteen-year old self, and you rejoice at the little inside jokes of your own little world, then you can appreciate the ability to sit back and look around at the assholes taking life so serious while you go on humming either Benny Hill, Looney Tunes or the Three Stooges theme songs in your silly head.

Now that we're on that level, let me introduce to you R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders.

These guys are for people like us who like to sit back and smile at that Big Full Moon...
People who enjoy laughing at the most intelligent, stupid instances of everyday life and people who like to drop off the cliff in the back of their skull to all of those places that only they can see; where there is a band shell nestled in a quiet summer town at dusk and the clocks are all broken. Sitting amongst your dreams, you can watch that moon rise and listen to the sweet sounds of a light heart...

Here's something that just kills me... It has been NINETEEN YEARS since this album came out. NINETEEN! Everything is nineteen...
I know you may know of this glorious beast of a record, and if you do than you certainly agree that it is one of the coolest records ever made. Way ahead of it's time and all that jazz, I still get a hard on when this one rolls. The drumming of Ivan de Prume (had to look that one up) is pure thunder on every track and it sounds like the snare is going to cave in and die every time he hits it... he hits my hair...we all know Rob Zombie like we know Peter Pan peanut butter and he delivers here on the band's third album with true homage to everything cool. You dig horror movies and zombies and strippers and hell raising and sci-fi and old Twilight Zones and beer and fast cars and Black Sabbath?

Put this in your ears Jack...

This blog USED to be something I was very proud of. I worked on it religiously every day a few years back and even brought on some very close friends to write posts and share our great love of music to anyone that would listen. If you remember, cool, if not then you really didn't miss much.

Two years ago I stopped writing here because I had shit to do that was important. The Groove lapsed into purgatory and people became grumpy. That was a nice thing in a way because it meant people liked it here.

That made me happy.

So, yeah, I took it to heart. I destroyed it entirely.
I felt bad later, because of all the hard work my friends put into it and I figured that there is always going to be a critic...
